To avoid breakage

  • Keep your collets clean after each bit change.
  • Wax the threads with parafin wax occasionally, this helps to tighten the grip on the bit.
  • Cutting lengths should be as short as possible to accommodate length of cut.
  • Cut material in several passes. (depth of cut should be no more than the diameter of the bit. except in foam)
  • Keep the feed rate up and adjust the spindle speed lower. You should be making chips not dust.
  • Always use oil when cutting metals.
  • Use a larger diameter or a high speed steel bit.
  • More flutes on a bit the better the finish / Less flutes on a bit the faster the feed rate.

To avoid melting

  • Make sure that your bit is not dull.
  • Make sure that there is enough cutting edge length (CEL).
  • Try a collant or air spray.
  • Speed up the feed rate.
  • Lower the spindle speed, not the feed rate.
  • Use a single flute bit.
