To avoid breakage
- Keep your collets clean after each bit change.
- Wax the threads with parafin wax occasionally, this helps to tighten the grip on the bit.
- Cutting lengths should be as short as possible to accommodate length of cut.
- Cut material in several passes. (depth of cut should be no more than the diameter of the bit. except in foam)
- Keep the feed rate up and adjust the spindle speed lower. You should be making chips not dust.
- Always use oil when cutting metals.
- Use a larger diameter or a high speed steel bit.
- More flutes on a bit the better the finish / Less flutes on a bit the faster the feed rate.
To avoid melting
- Make sure that your bit is not dull.
- Make sure that there is enough cutting edge length (CEL).
- Try a collant or air spray.
- Speed up the feed rate.
- Lower the spindle speed, not the feed rate.
- Use a single flute bit.
